The Pre-Trial Conference is where the judge checks on the status with all parties involved that all evidence has been provided to defense counsel. Ariz.R.Crim.P., Rule 16.5. Also, the judge also checks on the status of interviews and other matters that are necessary for the defense to prepare their case. Additionally, during this period of the court process, plea negotiations are held with the prosecutor and various motions can be filed (if factually based) by defense counsel.
